The BBC interviews Angela Mortimer

On Thursday 24th March, the third episode of The BBC 2 series, The British At Work, was aired. This four part documentary presented by Kirsty Young takes you on a journey through the ages from the 1940’s to present day, and shows how attitudes towards the workplace have changed so significantly.

In series one we heard stories of women in a male-dominated workforce, and how postwar optimism turned sour, and in episode two we looked at the years in which the post-war baby boom generation joined the workforce.
Episode 3 saw Kirsty Young look at work in the 80's and 90's, which she defines as an era of startling contrasts.

It is in this episode that Angela Mortimer, C0-Founder and Director of Angela Mortimer Plc is featured. Kirsty Young specifically interviewed Angela with a view to gaining an insight to the challenges she faced while pioneering the way in which she worked and tried to drive her own business forward. Competing once again in an environment where she was continually told she wouldn’t succeed, Angela tells stories of defying convention while she expanded her own company, acquiring many others along the way.

The 80’s and 90’s saw the work environment evolve at an alarming pace, technology became more important by the day, women sought to forge their own careers as opposed to starting a family and habits which would be unthinkable in these modern times, such as smoking at your desk, disappeared. Things were changing and they were changing fast.

Angela successfully navigated this truly exciting, yet very difficult time which resulted in her having an organisation with offices throughout the UK and Europe. Employing ‘the right people’ but then empowering them to be creative and entrepreneurial underpinned everything she and the organisation stood for, and it is that principle that still sees Angela Mortimer Plc hold such a unique position in today’s marketplace.
